Sonic Frontiers is currently being developed for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and is available for pre-order now. Sega originally announced Sonic Frontiers in May as part of the Sonic Central livestream to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary, and later revealed an official announcement trailer in December at The Game Awards. It also will feature an original storyline from Sonic Boom writer Ian Flynn. No official date has been provided yet, but many of Sonics previous major releases, including Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces were released in November, and it wouldnt be surprising to see Sega continue that trend. According to the developers, Sonic Frontiers is an “open-zone-inspired experience” that will allow Sonic to explore freely. Sonic Frontiers is currently set to release in late 2022. The game is being developed by Sega’s Sonic Team Japan and is being led by producer Sachiko Kawamura and director Morio Kishimoto. Another portion shows Sonic encircling a robot, creating a trail of light that boosts the enemy into the air, as Sonic follows up with a chain of slow-motion attacks. Some of the mechanics look unfamiliar, and at one point the blue hedgehog runs on what appears to be a high-tech hamster wheel to scan the world. The trailer shows Sonic running though vast grassy planes as a relaxing piano tune plays in the background. Sega reveals a brand-new Sonic Frontiers figure, with some pictures leaking that show the possible first look at an in-game collectible. Nintendo took their original successful Mario formula and adapted it to 3D and it was and still is a huge success. An experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the. But the gameplay? That's too fundamental. Worlds will collide in Sonic the Hedgehogs newest adventure. That's part of what made Sonic a success, so why completely change it? I could live with the annoying changes to the characters, art style, music, etc. I don't understand why Sonic Team is so against the original Sonic momentum-based gameplay where speed is earned, making traversal and platforming more satisfying. Same tried boost formula with a heavy dose of on-rails, pinball mechanics. I wouldn't trust IGN's impressions here either.
